about smith films
My name is Nicholas Smith.
My name is Nicholas and I help create wedding films to empower those in love. I’m a Johannesburg-based wedding cinematographer specialising in helping couples create their best, candid, and natural moments on camera.
I help share what love looks like in the modern world, and the magic it creates, the narratives around it and the fleeting tiny special moments in between. For the couple and individual, and for the artistic minds who understand that the greatest masterpieces in life grow from an understanding of each other and love.
I pride myself in being unobtrusive while still capturing the beauty and elegance of your preparation times, ceremony, reception and beyond.
Utilizing the latest technology, I provide a unique and personalised experience to accent your individual needs.
Planning your special day can be hectic & stressful. With years’ of experience, I will be able to guide you through the process & recommend any services you may have questions about.

Simply put, I am a perfectionist, always striving towards providing superior quality in my work. This environment of creative competition is one of my greatest assets in ensuring that the absolute best is always aimed for in everything that I do and am always striving to improve my skill and work after each wedding day. I also believe in engaging our clients in the creative process. Creativity and imagination are the fuel to your fire, and it goes without saying that bringing couples into the fold of my artistic endeavors will always produce unforgettable memories that last throughout the couples’ life together. I have extensive experience with a multitude of couples from many diverse backgrounds, and in the spirit of South Africa’s multiculturalism, I can accommodate and adapt to the cultures, styles, and tastes of my clients.
In terms of equipment, we bring tripods, monopods, sliders, steadicams, lav mics, digital field sounds recorders, lights, and plenty of backup gear to film your wedding. You also have access to drone footage.
Yes, I will always bring a backup camera to every wedding I film. Every moment of your wedding day is precious, and thus I take all precautions to be ready if there are any hiccups in the filming process.
I usually ask our clients to provide us with 15 of their favourite songs. From this selection, we will then pick the song that best reflects the wedding. We also have a list of song suggestions that we can provide you for consideration.
Yes, I love to travel!
Yes, I usually follow the wedding party to the photoshoot. During the photo session, I capture candid moments between the bridal party, the bride, and the groom. If time permits, we will also try to have a creative filming session. Usually, we ask the bride & groom to reserve 20 to 30 minutes for the creative video shoot.
We generally deliver all our videos within five months.
Usually, clients book 5 to 16 months in advance. I recommend that you book for your wedding date as early as possible to secure services for your special day.
Unfortunately, due to high demand, we cannot hold wedding dates. Your wedding date is secured with a signed agreement and deposit.
Once you have finalised the decision to hire me for your wedding, we will draft up a contract for your date. Once both parties have signed the contract, and the deposit fee is paid, we will lock your wedding day and turn down future inquiries about that wedding date.
Our goal is to work in unison with your wedding photographer to document your wedding day in the best possible way. We know that photography is an integral part of capturing the memories from your wedding, so the logistics behind the entire videography and photography process is essential to our work. In the morning when you are getting ready, we would typically arrive 30 minutes before your photographer to ensure we get the shots that we need. If you have a very tight schedule, we will communicate with your photographer either before or on the day of the wedding to make sure we do not disrupt the flow of each other’s work. When it comes to the ceremony, we will tell your photographer exactly where we will be standing to film. If needed, we will move to make sure that your photographer can get the perfect shot of you. For the reception, we will inform your photographer of our planned filming locations to best capture your entrances, speeches, dances, and wedding reception activities.
